Amitabh Bachchan: Don't see The Great Gatsby role as Hollywood debut

Written By Unknown on Monday, May 13, 2013 | 11:39 AM

Amitabh Bachchan has called his belated Hollywood debut in The Great Gatsby "just a friendly gesture" but would not mind doing an encore if he comes across something interesting."I don't look upon it as my Hollywood debut. It is just a friendly gesture and nothing more. It is just a small scene with Gatsby and his friend, played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire. Meyer Wolfsheim is looked upon as some kind of mentor to Gatsby in the story," Bachchan told PTI in an interview over phone from Mumbai.

Asked whether he is open to doing more Hollywood films, Bachchan said, "I don't know... If something is offered and I need to consider, I will certainly consider it."The Baz Luhrmann directed film, a 3D adaptation of F Scott Fitzgerald's 1925 novel, is set in the roaring 1920s of America and stars DiCaprio, Maguire and Carey Mulligan in lead roles. Warner Bros is releasing the film in India on May 17, just two days after its screening at Cannes film festival.

Bachchan's appearance in the Hollywood film comes after a successful four-decade-long career in India as he "never came upon a Hollywood role" before.

The megastar is seen sporting sideburns and impressive whiskers in the movie, something that Luhrmann came up with.

"The look was Luhrmann's idea. I have got nothing to do with it. I only told him that I can't remove my beard because I was in the middle of continuity and he incorporated that."

Asked about re-teaming with the Australian director, he said, "That's something he will have to decide. I can't speak for him but it would be wonderful if he does and it would be fantastic if he were to ask me to work again."

Bachchan is happy that India is making its presence felt globally with its cinematic culture.

"I am delighted that India is being looked upon as a nation that is culturally important as far as cinema is concerned. A lot of talent is going across and working in Hollywood, there are many co-productions.

"We hope that in future many films get shot here and also have Indian artistes in it. I find these are happy moments."

Bachchan first met Luhrmann, who is famous for his colourful movies set on a huge canvas, while the director was on a private trip to India.

"I was quite surprised that he (Luhrmann) wanted to meet me or knew who I was. We met but we did not talk about any film. He was just touring India. One day he called me and said,'there is a small, little role. I know this is not big for you but I would be really happy if you could do it.' So I said, 'fine'," says Bachchan recounting how he came onboard for the film.

Besides the cameo, Bachchan's famous baritone also appears in one of the songs in the movie. Rapper Jay-Z, who is behind the music in the film, has incorporated a portion of his dialogue in one of the tracks.

"Jay-Z who has done the music on it, wanted to use a portion of my dialogue in the song that he has composed. Baz Luhrmann just asked me whether he could use my voice. The song probably has something to do who Gatsby is," Bachchan said.

Describing his meeting with DiCaprio and Maguire, Bachchan said they were very normal and friendly.

"We did not talk about Indian films. I don't think they (DiCaprio and Maguire) know me at all but it was nice meeting them and they were just very casual, normal individuals. They were very friendly, very warm and very cooperative."

Bachchan spent about a week shooting his part and was charmed by the professionalism on the movie set.

"We worked for 2-3 days in preparation and I think about two days of shooting. It was just marvellous to watch the kind of dedication that people have on sets. Yes, the atmosphere is no different from any other set but there is a certain method of working where everybody has designated jobs and goes ahead and fulfils it in the most efficient manner possible.

"There is huge amount of professionalism, great research and detailing that goes into preparing something like this, especially if it is a period film and this was about 1920s New York."

Kristen Stewart is planning a romantic reunion with Robert Pattinson

Written By Unknown on Monday, May 6, 2013 | 11:12 AM

22-year-old actress Kristen Stewart - whose relationship with her Twilight Saga co-star Robert Pattinson has been strained since her fling with married director Rupert Sanders was exposed last August - is reportedly planning a "special romantic reunion".A source close to the on/off couple told OK! Magazine: "Kristen's got a very special night planned for Rob when he gets back. She wants to surprise him by waiting in the backseat of a limo at the airport. It's rare for celeb couples to do that because it doubles the chances of a security issue. So he'll be really surprised when he gets in that limo.

"Rob has a huge group of friends who are all dying to take him out, but Kristen's told them to back off until she's had some time alone."

Robert has already been informed to be ready for romance upon his return.

The insider said Kristen "told him she wants him all to herself in the first 24 hours he's back. He'll be jet-lagged of course, but she's got a relaxing night planned with a bottle of wine, pizza, and the two of them. That's all they both want."

The pair are both said to have really missed each other during their time apart and can't wait to spend some quality time on their relationship.

The source said: "They provide huge comfort to each other and it was hell hitting that Oscar red carpet on crutches without him. That night really brought home how much she needs him in her life."

George Clooney happier than ever with Stacy Keibler

Hollywood star George Clooney is happier than ever with former wrestler Stacy Keibler, according to friends.

Although the couple, who have been dating for almost two years, have been the subject of split reports recently, friends insist they are more together than ever because Stacey Keibler knows exactly how to handle him, reported National Enquirer.

"At first I wouldn't have given them two months. While Stacy is certainly gorgeous, she's this D-List celebrity on the arm of one of the most powerful men in Hollywood. But George only seems more drawn to her as time goes by," a close friend said.

Friends also said that George Clooney, 51, is impressed by the 31-year-old former wrestler's independence as many of his former girlfriends were too clingy.

"She goes off and does her own thing whenever George is spending time with his pals or is deep into a film project - she doesn't even call him. But eventually, he starts missing her and he's the one who calls. She lets George come to her. This is the most comfortable I've ever seen George in a relationship. I think he may even be coming to see that as he's getting older, his pledge to remain a bachelor is kind of a hollow one," they said.

Steve Jobs biopic's release delayed

The release of Steve Jobs' biopic starring Ashton Kutcher has been delayed since the makers of the film require more time to market the film. The film was originally set to release on April 19 this year, the 37th anniversary of the founding of Apple Computer.

A new date has yet to be determined, said the Hollywood Reporter.

The much-anticipated biopic, directed by Joshua Michael Stern and written by Matthew Whitely, made its world premiere in January at the Sundance Film Festival.

Jobs chronicles the Apple co-founder's ascension from college dropout to one of the most revered entrepreneurs of the 20th century known for pioneering personal computer revolution.

Portions of the film was shot in the garage where Jobs first set up shop at his family's home in Palo Alto, California.

The film also stars Dermot Mulroney, Josh Gad, Lukas Haas, JK Simmons and Matthew Modine.

Robert Pattinson is "nervous" about reuniting with Kristen Stewart

26-year-old actor Robert Pattinson, who has been filming his upcoming movie The Rover in Australia since the beginning of February, has just weeks left on location and the British heartthrob is reportedly anxious and nervous about returning to Los Angeles to face his on/off girlfriend Kristen Stewart. A source revealed to RadarOnline.com: "The set really is in the middle of nowhere, a good drive from Adelaide, so it's been the ideal setting for him to forget all his troubles and bury himself in his work.

"After filming, Robert's been keen to socialise with the cast and crew and loves being in the outback, away from city life. It's the peace and quiet he has needed since his relationship woes with Kristen, and the perfect way to re-evaluate things.

"But, with just short of three weeks left of filming, Robert's beginning to get nervous about returning to LA and Kristen. He left in frosty circumstances and needs to make a decision on what to do next."

While Rob has been working down under, 22-year-old Kristen - who cheated on him with married director Rupert Saunders last year - has been spending time with her friend and Twilight co-star Taylor Lautner in a hope the hunk will have advice on how she can win Rob back for good.

The source added: "Kristen has been spending a lot of time with Taylor of late because she's been using him as a sounding board for her relationship with Robert.

"She thinks that he may have some insight in how she should proceed with Robert - and where their relationship is going."

Jennifer Aniston, Justin Theroux plan two weddings

Hollywood couple Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux are reportedly planning to have two wedding ceremonies, one in New York and another in California.Friends say the couple intend to celebrate their marriage in both cities, with 'his and hers' events. "Justin grew up in New York, most of his family are on the East Coast, so rumour is that after 'Jen's wedding' in California, there will be something in New York," a source was quoted telling the UK issue of Grazia magazine.

"There's certainly going to be a wedding party on the East Coast. It might not even be until the summer, but Justin has taken charge of his side of the organisation and is really getting into it. He's arranging live music and the theme is going to be very rock 'n' roll," the source added.

While Justin Theroux, 41, is organising a party, 44-year-old Jennifer Aniston's ceremony is likely to be more romantic and chilled out. "Jen wants it to be really relaxed and quite classic. It will be traditional," another source said.

The pair are also thought to have agreed to divide their time between the East and the West coast once they are married.

Robert Pattinson gets 8 million pounds for ad campaign

Twilight hunk Robert Pattinson has acted out with four stunning models in a new advertising campaign for which he is said to have got a whopping 8 million pounds. The 26-year-old indulges in some arty bed-hopping for a new Dior men's clothing campaign which will be appearing everywhere from May, reported Sun Online.

He filmed his demanding gig just after his girlfriend Kristen Stewart cheated on him with married director Rupert Sanders.

"The advert is sexually explicit. It is pushing the boundaries of what you can get away with in advertising. Robert is topless for part of it and kissing one of the models.

"There's another scene where he takes part in a foursome in various states of undress, although it's not clear whether those scenes will make the final cut," a source said.

Dior are deliberately making an advert to ruffle some feathers.

Gerard Butler had the holiday from hell in the Himalayas

Gerard Butler has revealed he had the worst trip of his life to the Himalayas. The Olympus Has Fallen actor loves globe-trotting in between breaks from his film career, although contracting severe food-poisoning on a camping trip in the mountain range nearly put him off travelling for life.

He recalled: "We went up into the Himalayas and I drank water from the Ganges River. We hiked up to the top of this mountain and I got sick - and I mean sick. I ended up getting sick for a month.

"The water looks fresh up there but what I didn't realise is that, upstream, there's villagers pissing and s****ing in it. We camped on top of the mountain ... I'm up all night s****ing and throwing up, with a massive Himalayan thunderstorm going on. It felt like the whole world was exploding.

"Finally the next morning they had to bring me down on a donkey, and in the heat and the smell, I had to get off and walk. It was the most awful experience."

The poor star has become hardened to unpleasant situations when travelling thanks to his pet pooch Lolita because the cute pug - who he bought on a whim in a pet store - isn't properly toilet trained.

Gerard, 43, joked to ShortList magazine: "I bought her and we immediately started putting cigarettes in her mouth and all that's stuff - not lit, of course - and I realised you could have a lot of fun with a dog.

"Until she started s****ing all over the place. I was on a private plane once and it was like somebody had bathed us in s**t."

Robert Downey Jr will return for Iron Man 4

48-year-old actor Robert Downer Jr has thus far refused to confirm if he will make another movie in the successful franchise but director Shane Black is confident Robert will return for at least one more outing as Tony Stark/Iron Man. Speaking at the Iron Man 3 UK premiere at Odeon Leicester Square in London on Thursday (18.04.13), Shane told BANG Showbiz: "I think he'll be back for another one. I'm sure of it."

Co-star Sir Ben Kingsley heaped praise on Robert for his portrayal of the billionaire businessman turned superhero.

He said: "I think what the film examines, thanks to Robert Downey Jr's wonderful sense of performance is, you have the iron suit and the man inside it. Which is which? Which is the more powerful? Is it the guy inside the suit, or is it the suit itself?"

Meanwhile, Rebecca Hall, who plays Maya Hansen, couldn't hide her delight at joining the cast.

She said: "I'm really excited to be here. I'm really excited to be part of it. It's definitely a unique experience to join a franchise when you know so much of it already and you're already acquainted with who the characters are and you've seen them in the cinema. It's an exciting thing to get on board that. It's very thrilling."

Robert also attended the premiere along with Don Cheadle while stars including Demot O'Leary, Oritse Williams and J.B. Gill from JLS, Labrinth and Kimberly Wyatt walked the red carpet.

Gwyneth Paltrow thinks Robert Downey Jr is a "wimp"

40-year-old actress Gwyneth Paltrow shot scenes for Iron Man 3 in which she wore her co-star's famous suit, and expected to need a lot of mental preparation beforehand after seeing the "hell" the actor went through whenever he donned the restrictive garments - but then couldn't understand why he found it so traumatic. She said: "I get to do a bit of action and I get to wear the Iron Man suit for a while - it's very cool.

"It's quite cumbersome but not so bad. I thought it was going to be terrible because in the first two movies Robert would put on the suit and start sweating, he'd have a nervous breakdown and would meditate and cry. He was in hell.

"So, I was like, 'Wow, I'd better start mentally preparing myself for the suit,' and I put it on and was like, 'This guy is a wimp, it's really not that bad.' "

The actress - who has children Apple, eight, and Moses, seven, with husband Chris Martin - says her young son particularly enjoyed seeing her as Pepper Potts wearing the suit.

She told Graham Norton in a TV interview airing in the UK tonight (19.04.13): "I'll never forget his face when he saw me walk out in the suit. It was a really good moment."

And Gwyneth is taking great delight in watching Moses figure out how famous she is.

She said:"I love watching his seven-year-old brain put together who I am. We were at a Justin Bieber concert and Moses said, 'Maybe Justin knows who you are from Iron Man.'"

Salman Rushdie gave Midnight's Children rights to Deepa Mehta for a dollar

Celebrated writer Salman Rushdie is all over the film version of his acclaimed novel 'Midnight's Children'. He has himself done the screenplay and also serves as the film's all-knowing narrator. Yet he says it's Indo-Canadian director Deepa Mehta's film. She "absolutely" took over once the script was done, Mr Rushdie told IANS in an interview on phone from New York, where both he and Deepa Mehta were for the special kickoff screening of the film in conjunction with the New York Indian Film Festival.

"A film can be only one person's film and not two," he said. But they talked often on the telephone during the shoot. He went to Mumbai to help with casting, and from Sri Lanka, where much of the shooting took place, Deepa Mehta sent him pictures every day, and he talked with the actors over Skype.

Though the book is set in India and Pakistan, they chose to shoot in Sri Lanka as the cities depicted have changed beyond recognition. In many ways, Colombo made a better Mumbai than the real city does as more of the century-old architecture has survived there, Rushdie said.

But some scenes were shot at the Dal Lake in Kashmir, Mumbai, Karachi and Agra too. "How else can you show a man cycling past the Taj Mahal if not shoot in Agra?" he asked.

The allegorical tale on the partition of India told through mysteriously intertwined lives of two babies switched at birth as India attains freedom at midnight on Aug 15, 1947 will be released in the US beginning with New York on April 26.

It will be followed by Los Angeles and Washington DC (May 3), Boston, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Dallas, Phoenix, Seattle, and Portland (May 10), and San Francisco Bay Area, Denver, Minneapolis, and Memphis and (May 17).

Salman Rushdie said at first he was hesitant about doing the screenplay adaptation himself as "I am a novelist and not a professional screen writer".

But Deepa Mehta was very persuasive and convinced him to do it as she feared no one else could do it justice given its almost intimidating pedigree - having won both the Booker of Bookers and the Best of the Bookers. In the end he was glad that he did it.

Screenplay writing was a very collaborative affair. First both Deepa Mehta and Salman Rushdie made separate lists of what to keep and what to discard from the novel with a staggering scope, from 1917 to 1974, and 62 locations from Karachi to Kashmir to Old Delhi to Bombay.

"In the end we found how identical our lists were," said Salman Rushdie describing Mehta as the "perfect" director to take his book to film. "It was Deepa Mehta's passion for the book that attracted me, as well, of course, as my admiration for her work."

The actual writing too was a "very back and forth" process. "I would write a draft and send it to her. She would comment on it and I would write back," he said.

Turning a 446-page novel into a 130-page screenplay was "an immense challenge," he said. But since he was looking at it after more than 30 years, he could do it more dispassionately.

"The problem was, so to speak, how to find the movie inside the book, while preserving the essence - the heart and soul - of the book," he said. "Maybe I could be more disrespectful to the original than anyone else!"

The idea for Mr Rushdie to also do the narration/voiceover for Midnight's Children was also entirely Deepa Mehta's. First, they did not want to have any narration, but then found it necessary to string it together given its range and scope.

"We tried a couple of professional actors at first, but were not satisfied. So finally Mehta asked me to try it." So what's Mr Rushdie's verdict on the finished product? "Well, I am very biased. But I think it's good," he said looking at the response to the film at the Toronto, Vancouver and the BFI London film festivals. Luckily they did not have any run in with the Indian censors over the depiction of the 1975 emergency or any other issue. "They passed it without a single cut. They had, in fact, called a historian, who said it depicted an accurate picture of an unfortunate phase of Indian history."

"You may disagree with one's interpretation, but you are entitled to it," they said. "But then the problem with the Indian censors is, they are so unpredictable," said Rushdie referring to the issues faced by Kamal Haasan's spy thriller Vishwaroopam.

It was indeed true that he gave away the film rights of Midnight's Children to Deepa Mehta for just one dollar! It makes an interesting story, but it's not unusual for independent filmmakers, who find it hard to raise money, to sign up someone with a token amount and then pay them later, said Mr Rushdie.

"It's more like a handshake," he said though he for one was yet to be paid. Mr Rushdie is currently developing a TV serial for Showtime called Next People - a kind of "paranoid science-fiction series, people disappearing and being replaced by other people."

"There is a pilot I wrote for Showtime. They were happy about it. But we are still awaiting that little green light!"

So which one of his works would one see on the big screen next? "Right now there's a project to make a film of my memoir 'Joseph Anton,' but I am absolutely not planning to write the screenplay" because unlike Midnight's Children he was too close to it.

"If we are lucky, if it goes really fast then it may be ready at some point next year. But it may take longer, I don't know," said Mr Rushdie.

Tom Cruise has great action skills, says Jack Reacher stunt driver

Tom Cruise is an "anomaly" in Hollywood. The 50-year-old actor is famous for doing his own stunts in his action movies and stunt driver Joey Box, who worked with Tom on Jack Reacher, says Tom is great to work with because of his action skills.

Speaking at Paramount Studios in Los Angeles, Joey exclusively told BANG Showbiz: "Tom is an anomaly, I've never worked with another actor who has the acumen for stunts that he does. He's done so much and he's trained for so many movies and so many different types of stunt work, fighting, fire, explosions, car chases, motorcycles.

"He has such a good solid foundation of skills that you're not really putting him in that much danger like you would with another actor when you're working out the stunts. He's more like one of the stunt guys.

"Tom is a very safe guy, he knows that he can put himself in these dramatic situations without injuring himself, there is a lot of skill to it.

While Tom is a perfectionist, Joey says the Hollywood veteran is always quick to praise the team around him.

He explained: "He is a taskmaster and there is a certain level that you need to be at to work with him. You have to get it done but he is so appreciative of everyone he works with, he surrounds himself with the best of the best and he knows he couldn't make the movies that he does at this level without them."

Carey Mulligan: The Great Gatsby's Daisy is tricky

Actress Carey Mulligan believes her role in the upcoming film The Great Gatsby was tricky as her character constantly contradicted itself. The 27-year-old plays Daisy Buchanan in Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of F Scott Fitzgerald's iconic novel, reported Digital spy.

"Daisy is kind of a tricky character, because she contradicts herself constantly, but she's also not very consistently laid out. She's eccentric, but seems to feel things passionately, but not necessarily for very long," Mulligan said.

The actress who has previously appeared in films such as Shame, Drive and Never Let Me Go said that The Great Gatsby was by far the biggest movie she has worked on. "The scale of it is huge in comparison to all the films I've done," she added.

The Great Gatsby is slated for a release in the US on May 10 and in UK on May 16.

Is it a baby boy for Kate Middleton?

Prince Harry has reportedly revealed the sex of Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's first child, saying it will be a boy and that he is excited about welcoming his first nephew. And while Prince Williams and Duchess of Cambridge, whose maiden name is Kate Middleton, have made no official comment about the baby due in mid-July, Harry has found it hard to keep the secret, reports mirror.co.uk.

"Harry has been telling everyone Wills (Williams) and Kate are having a boy and how thrilled he is at the prospect of having a little nephew," said a source.

The source added: "He said the whole family were excited about it. Apparently, Kate has always wanted a boy. The close inner circle all know that it's a boy and they're busily buying gifts with a boy theme."

The British couple is not sharing information about the baby.

The source further added: "They're really working hard on baby names now and think they have it sorted. But they won't reveal anything to anyone - not even Harry. Of course, Harry's been making up crazy suggestions and winding them up too."

Gwyneth Paltrow is World's Most Beautiful Woman

Written By Unknown on Sunday, May 5, 2013 | 12:03 PM

Gwyneth Paltrow has been named the World's Most Beautiful Woman by People magazine. The Iron Man 3 actress has been awarded the annual honour by the US magazine beating off competition from the likes of Amanda Seyfried, Jennifer Lawrence, Pink and Halle Berry. However, Gwyneth insists if people could see her at home in her casual clothes they wouldn't think she was so beautiful. Speaking to the publication, she said: "Around the house, I'm in jeans and a T-shirt. I don't really wear make-up."

If she ever does opt for glamour at home then her husband Chris Martin will make fun of her.

She added: "He'll make a joke about it. If I've gotten fully dressed up, he'll be like, 'Oh, wow! You're Gwyneth Paltrow!' Because he's used to seeing me in like baggy shorts and frizzy hair."

Gwyneth revealed her eight-year-old daughter Apple is already interested in fashion and beauty and she lets her wear a little make-up on special occasions.

The 40-year-old screen star - who also has a seven-year-old son, Moses, with Coldplay frontman Chris - said: "When we're home sometimes, she'll put on mascara. And sometimes I'll let her wear something out to dinner - but just a little dab.

In September, People magazine also honoured Gwyneth for being the World's Best-Dressed Woman.

Last year, Gwyneth's friend Beyonce was bestowed the World's Most Beautiful Woman title by People
